The ruffled grouse is named for the black ruffs on the sides of its neck. They are fairly common in mixed woodlands.  They have a wonderful courtship "dance" where the male raises the ruffs on his neck and crest, fans his tail, and beats his wings to make a hollow, drumming noise.
